Lead generation agency alternatives for small business

If you sell high-value work to larger organisations and want meetings booked in your calendar, an appointment-setting agency is built for that and priced for it. If you’re a local business that wants other local businesses to hear from you, Curlew writes to them and answers the replies for $99 a month, though it reaches out by email only and doesn’t promise meetings.

What a lead generation agency gives you

Lead generation and appointment-setting agencies contact prospects for you, by phone, email or LinkedIn, and pass on either leads (usually a name and some interest) or appointments (a meeting in your calendar). The established ones bring trained callers, scripts, data and a process, and can be under way quickly. Nousu Collective's comparison gives launch times from about two weeks for onshore agencies to four to eight weeks for some other models.

Most are set up for business-to-business sales where a single meeting is worth a lot: technology products, professional services, equipment and large commercial contracts. Nousu Collective's comparison, for example, is written mainly for companies selling to senior decision makers. That shapes both what they do well and what they charge.

What agencies cost (October 2026)

Many agencies quote only after a call. Two Australian sources that publish ranges, checked in October 2026:

  • Nousu Collective (updated September 2026): $6,000 to $15,000 a month for onshore Australian callers, $2,000 to $5,000 a month for offshore appointment setting, $5,000 to $12,000 a month for global multi-channel agencies, and $150 to $500 per qualified meeting on pay-per-appointment, citing market data.
  • Callbox Australia: $50 to $300 per meeting, $1,000 to $5,000 a month on retainer, or $25 to $99 or more an hour, which it describes as general industry norms.

At the lowest published retainer, a year costs $12,000. At the top of the onshore range it is $180,000. Per-meeting pricing can look cheaper, but it depends on how many meetings you need and what counts as one. Our guide to what introductions cost lays these figures out beside a networking group, a BDM and doing it yourself, with a simple way to work out how many new clients each needs to win to pay for itself.

The terms matter as much as the price. Minimum terms vary between agencies, and a three-month initial term on a $6,000 retainer is an $18,000 commitment before you can stop.

When an agency is the better choice

  • Each client is worth a lot. If one new contract brings in tens of thousands in gross profit, a few hundred dollars for a qualified meeting is easy to justify.
  • You want meetings, not conversations. If you want your calendar filled with booked appointments and you'll take it from there, that is what appointment setters are built for.
  • Your buyers answer the phone. Some buyers are easier to reach by a call than an email. Agencies that cold call cover that; Curlew doesn't.
  • You sell beyond your local area. National or interstate campaigns, multi-channel work across phone, email and LinkedIn, and reaching senior people at large companies are agency territory.

When Curlew is the better choice

Curlew is made for local, owner-run Australian businesses that could do better through other businesses: a commercial cleaner who wants office contracts, a plumber who wants work from property managers, a photographer who wants venues to recommend them. It finds local businesses that could buy from you or refer customers to you, reads each one's website, writes to them by email in your business name, answers the replies and passes anyone interested to you with the thread.

It costs $99 a month including GST, with no setup fee and no contract: cancel any time. Sending starts at about 10 businesses a day and builds over four to five weeks to up to 50 a day, Monday to Friday. Research and drafting are done by our proprietary system, and our team in Brisbane checks the work.

Four things are worth comparing directly with any agency you're talking to:

  • Your name and address. Curlew writes in your business name from a sending domain registered close to it, so your own email is never put at risk. The domain is yours to keep.
  • Approval. You approve the first email before anything is sent.
  • Where addresses come from. Curlew doesn't buy, sell or hand over email lists. It writes only to businesses, at the address each has published on its own website, and stops writing to any business that asks. The Spam Act applies to every email sent in your name, whoever sends it; see is cold emailing legal in Australia.
  • What's promised. Curlew doesn't promise replies, leads, meetings or work, and it reaches out by email only. It isn't for health or law practices, franchises or chains.

Questions to ask before you sign anything

Whichever way you go, get straight answers to these:

  • What counts as a lead or an appointment, and do I pay if they don't turn up?
  • Whose name and email address do you write from, and what happens to that address when I leave?
  • Where do the contact details come from?
  • What is the minimum term and the notice period?
  • Do I see and approve what goes out in my name?

Using both

If you already pay an agency to book meetings with larger organisations, Curlew can sit alongside it on the local side: the strata managers, builders and venues near you that a national campaign may not reach. Keep their targets apart, with the agency on larger organisations and Curlew on local businesses, so no one hears from you twice.

Or start small. At $99 a month with no contract, it is a low-cost way to see how local businesses respond to you before you sign a retainer worth many times that. If you're also weighing a hire, see an alternative to hiring a BDM.

Questions people ask

How much does a lead generation agency cost in Australia?

Published ranges checked in October 2026 run from $1,000 to $15,000 a month on retainer, or $50 to $500 per meeting on pay-per-appointment. Many agencies don’t publish prices and quote only after a call, so ask for the total cost over your first three months.

What’s the difference between a lead and an appointment?

A lead is usually a name and some sign of interest, which you still have to follow up. An appointment is a meeting in your calendar. A cheap price per lead can cost more than a dear price per meeting once you count the leads that go nowhere.

Is Curlew an appointment-setting service?

No. Curlew reaches out by email. It finds local businesses, writes to them in your business name, answers the replies and passes anyone interested to you with the thread. It doesn’t cold call anyone and doesn’t promise meetings.

Who owns the email address used to write to prospects?

With an agency it depends on the agency, so ask before you sign. With Curlew, each client gets a sending domain registered close to their business name, and the domain is theirs to keep.
